American Pie Grilled Cheese

Granny Grilled Cheese

It’s the last day of National Grilled Cheese Month and I couldn’t let it end without posting my favorite grilled cheese. This recipe is inspired by my favorite sandwich from Bread of Life bakery in Honolulu. I stopped in to get a ham and cheese sandwich one day, and to my surprise there were slices of tart Granny Smith apples layered in between the cheese. I wasn’t thrilled to find fruit in my sandwich, but it turned out to be an addicting combo of flavors and textures!

Granny Grilled Cheese

There are few things more American than apple pie and grilled cheese, however, the real star of the show is the bread. The bakery used thick, sturdy slices of fresh baked Hawaiian bread. In lieu of that, you can use Pão Doce, Challah, Brioche, or any other sweet, enriched bread.

Total Time: 10 minutes

Sweet bread + tart apples + salty ham + sharp cheddar = the best grilled cheese!

Ingredients

  • 2 thick slices of sweet bread
  • 3-4 thick slices of sharp cheddar
  • 2-3 slices of Granny Smith apples (I cut mine in rings)
  • 3 ounces of shaved deli ham
  • Softened butter

Instructions

  • On each slice of bread, spread butter on 1 side. On un-buttered side, layer cheese, apples, ham and more cheese. Top with bread, buttered side up. Cook on a hot griddle or frying pan, turning once until cheese is melted and bread is golden.
